Curly Watts and Terry Duckworth in the back alley.

Behind the backs of the terraced side of Coronation Street is a alleyway. The alleyway is inbetween the back of the houses of Coronation Street and Mawdsley Street. The alley runs from Rosamund Street to Viaduct Street.

History[]

The back alley was built as an alleyway inbetween Coronation Street and Mawdesley Street when the streets were built in 1901/1902 and completed in August 1902.

1960-present[]

In September 1964, an unexploded bomb was found by Stan Ogden in Albert Tatlock's back yard.

In August 1972, Stan was in the back alley looking for a local peeping tom when he himself was accused of being the peeping tom. The real culprit was soon caught.

One night in July 1973, Stan Ogden found an injured Bet Lynch down the back alley and called for help.

1984 was an eventful year for the back alley as Curly Watts saw a lady stealing washing from the back yards. He chased her but she was gone by the time he got to the back alley. Also that year, Percy Sugden was doing a Neighbourhood watch scheme and was caught by a female police officer. Alf vouched for Percy.

In 2001 Toyah Battersby was raped in the back alley.

In 2016, Sally and Yasmeen were looking for a dog in the back alley.

Trivia[]

  • The back alleyway has no streetlights so is quite dark at night time. Due to this, the alleyway has been a meeting place for local residents to discuss a dodgy deal, have a secret kiss, or to pry on neighbours, or even to protect neighbours, as Percy Sugden did in 1984, on his neighbourhood watch scheme after there was a spate of robberies in the area. Percy was accosted by a policewoman and arrested but Alf Roberts vouched for him. Also residents use the back alley to make secret phonecalls on their mobiles.
  • It is not very safe to walk down at night time either as in 1973 Bet Lynch was attacked there as was Toyah Battersby in 2001. In 2017, Summer Spellman took drugs down the back alley and a sinister man stalked Pat Phelan a few days later.
