Suranne Jones Karen McDonald
Suranne Jones (born Sarah Anne Jones; 27 August 1978) is a British actress who had portrayed Karen McDonald on Coronation Street from 2000 to 2004. She has had a very promising post-Coronation Street career and has appeared in numerous dramas.
Pre-Coronation Street[]
Born 27 August 1978. Suranne applied for the role of Charity Dingle in Emmerdale but lost out to Emma Atkins.
Coronation Street[]
She appeared in an episode as Mandy Phillips in 1997.
In 2000 she was cast in the regular role of Karen Philips. The character became the love interest and later wife of Steve McDonald, with their bickering relationship becoming popular with the viewing audience. The character later got into a feud with Tracy Barlow in 2004 following Steve's affair with Tracy and getting her pregnant to his child Amy.
After four years Jones quit the show in May 2004, citing that despite liking playing the role it was time for Karen to get out. She departed in December 2004 at the conclusion of her feud with Tracy and her marriage to Steve breaking down.
Despite calls for her to come back, Jones has ruled out returning in the role.
After Coronation Street[]
Jones went onto have a successful acting career following her departure from Coronation Street and has appeared in many dramas. From 2011 to 2016 she appeared in Doctor Foster and also served as executive producer.
